i'm not sure that we need animated and computer generated ? what do you think? I am a bit worried with genres (still) I have split music and film into subgenres, while text and image are split into mediums. Do you not think it is a little weird that it is like that? With image I know that there is no alternative, but text? -Ed

Audio genres

new music genres instead of world and indie! (also we could have ska & reggae together)

latin
african
Indie
asian
Traditional (this could be celtic music or gypsy music or andean music etc - a good alternative to world in my opinion - especially if the music doesnt fall into the above world genres)

I abhor that traditional genre ;) And I still think that although "world" is a teeny bit racist, it's better than trying to lump together entire continents and expandind the already large list of genres further. - Tom

ok, look tom - we cant have world - it's ridiculous - Reading has large african and middle eastern populations - we are not allowed to alientate them immediately by just having europe/american centric genres. We at least have to have something for them. I'm telling you that people would be appreciative if there were different world genres.

latin is definitely valid (its a style of music after all - salsa, flamenco, cha cha cha etc all fall under this)
so is african (so lets keep those two)
asian (im so sure about this one - maybe instead we could have middle eastern, East Asian, indian & pakistani instead. in fact i prefer that.)
traditional - this is tricky. But if i was to make a celtic track, where else would i put it otherwise?

Tom, as we are two middle class white boys trying to make something for everyone in Reading, we have to make sure that it is open to all ;)

I am not just making all of these genres up. I have looked through loads of different music genre classification systems, and this is what i've ended up with. Tom, i really will dispair if we just have world. You say that the genre list is large already - are you joking? love.edd

so final music list would be :

Acoustic
African
Asian
Blues
Caribbean
Classical
Dance
Electronic (can be removed if we have dance?)
Folk and Country
Funk
Indie
Jazz
Latin
Pop
Punk
Rap and Hip-Hop
Reggae and Ska
Rock and Metal
Soul and R&B

Hey hey, its clare. Ok I think I should first lay out how I see our aims to be for genre classification. Having the aim of attempting to create a diverse creative culture, we need to be wide-ranging, obviously. However, I think if we attempted to be exhaustive, people would take one look and scream as the list would just be too damn daughting! Hence we need to find a balance between representing everybody (and attempting to give them a category that best fits their work) and ensuring that the site is user friendly.

Ed, I completely understand the confusion of classing music and film into subgenres and text and image into mediums. However, I think the text genres section is perfect right now. If we attempted to divide it onto subgenres it would go crazy!I know it would be similar to the video section but I think users would prefer to search for an essay rather than any piece of writing on crime, for example. I think the length and style of the piece will be more important in this situation. But, having said that, is there any way we can have the function that Charlie searches for a poem. Then within poetry, he can search for romantic poetry. Because then, if Charlie did want to find out all the written material we have on romance, he would only have to do that 5 times - for each of the text genres. Is that clear and does it make sense? I think its more approachable that way.

Also, continuing that theme - are we going to have the function of being able to search for 3 music genres to refine the search? If so, I think this would allow us to have a greater number of genre classifications. Ed, I think the list you put up just above my entry sounds fine. And I agree with the seperation of "World" music - people who make it will prob want to distinguish and may be offended. I think its about the right length. Junction11 have a huge list of genres classification on their computer which is fun when I'm putting stuff onto it but I can imagine it would be a nightmare to orientate to attempt to find something! Too much choice can lead to the problem of interpretation and while I'm sure many musicians will feel their music is a lot more than just pop, for example, if we put up an explanation of why it has to be this way, I think they'd understand. Also they can always use the feedback section to let us know what they think. I think with time we may need to add more genres or maybe we'll want to take some down, depending on how they're being used. Also, I think that we should keep electronic as well as dance as this could encompass things like Steve Reich, which is most definately electronic but most definately not dance!

Video genres - I think we should definately keep music visuals/video. I don't think we need "satire" - I think this could be incorporated into other fields, depending on the context, eg comedy or political. I think it shouldn't be any longer than this.

Image genres - this is the one I have the most problem with and I don't know why! How are people going to upload their piece of mutli-media art or painting? By scanning? I think we should keep animation as well as computer generated because it could be a drawn animation or plasticine animation. oh I hope someone puts up a plasticine animation!

Much love, Clare

On the question of image genres, two thoughts:

First, people will put up paintings, drawings etc. by taking photos or scanning. Lots of artists do this already. Good galleries also do it.

Second, Ali tells me that art galleries generally either do it by date or by the following schema: Still life, Body, Landscape, History/Society. We *could* mix that scheme with the medium, though that might get a little confusing.

And more generally, we can later on add subcategories as Ber says, but for now we ought to just get the main ones done and dusted :)

I think it would be a good idea to allow artists to define their work as whatever genre they wish (genre-less also being a perfectly acceptable answer), and seperately define a genre title they wish to be filed under. So I can still write a toxic dancehall/house gabba/noisecore track, but just file it under electronic - freedom of expression AND simplicity of browsing :) pete

Hey everyone, i've been speaking to someone who is interested in putting drum n bass on the website but i noticed there was not a specific category for this. Also i think its a good idea to include the more obvious world music genres such as latin, asian etc. But do you think we should have a general world music section aswell so that we can incorperate some of the more diverse pieces without cluttering the screen with more genres? Also, personally i'm not sure that we need all those video genres at the moment- just a thought but what about having a general 'short film' section or something... sarah x
