MINUTES
Remix Brighton name?
DB: Are we Brighton Free Culture (BFC) or Remix Brighton (RB)?
EGJ: RB is a subset of BFC.
DB: We're FC group. RB is one of the things we will do.
MM: makes sense, but how would it work?
DB: RB related items would always be at top of agenda, so people not interested in FC issues can leave half way through.
EGJ: Question of identity. Would people get confused if we had both Remix Brighton and FC. What would we put on stickers?
MM: Would FC overload (new) individuals?
DB: Once RB website is up it will look after itself. Only getting it up is lots of work.
All: agree
ACTION: All should rethink aims, and retype them here: http://www.freeculture.org.uk/wiki/BrightonFreeCultureAims . We will have different aims for Remix Brighton and Brighton Free Culture.
LOGO
MM: Gave description of typeface logo (see http://www.freeculture.org.uk/wiki/BrightonLogos for logos & descriptions)
DNS: Displayed Logos (see above website)
RLR: sub-meeting wanted logo & font
EGJ: Can we use both?
DB: Can we use the "x" graphic from DNS logo and combine with MM typeface?
DNS: Want one of his logos with MM's typeface
DB: We need strong clear logo
EGJ: designers not asked to design overall identity
TBB: designers meant to select fewer designs, not decide on designs.
DB: referred to minutes mandating meeting to make decisions
DB: designers should/think about:
- Print issues
- colour schemes
- photocopy quality
- sizing issues
VOTE:
Type Logo: 3 MM, TBB, RLR
DNS logo: 2 DNS, EGJ
Throw all logos away: 1 DB
TBB: Can we try and incorporate "x" mark from DNS into logo?
ACTION: Designers to submit idea for mark/stamp (like Remix Reading house) for future meeting
ACTION: Ed to get logo onto website
Website
DB: Can we make decision to use RR code with wiki front end. Front end could have links to other sites e.g. ourmedia, RR etc
EGJ: Are you describing what you want the Brighton Free Culture page to be or RB? What is problem with RR?
DB: Wants site to be open for everyone to be able to edit. Shouldn't have to rely on programmers.
EGJ: We can't vote on the wiki because we don't know what it looks like. We at least a draft version, so the non-techie can compare and choose.
MM: Can we drop RR code if we want to?
DB: What happens if programmers vanish? None of us can program in Drupal. How redefinable is Drupal?
EGJ: We can change the front-end to the site as much as we like.
DB: Do we need something we can all change or only programmers?
EGJ: Designers can (and need to) work on how the site should work/look.
EGJ: propose vote for next meeting (if we have drafts/demonstrations of each):
1. Keep Remix Reading code but focus on adapting its look for Brighton. 2. Put RR Code in "our" wiki (embedded)
DB: I don't have the time to code the wiki (which would take a weeks work) if it might not be voted for. We shouldn't be over-focused on the web aspect anyway.
We then had a discussion about whether we should pay programmers when we aren't getting paid ourselves for the RB/FC stuff we do. There were no minutes taken (discussion was heated!).
EGJ made it clear that most 95% of work done on RR code was done for free (to the value of thousands). Paying programmers also helps speed up improvements. They would be implemented anyway, but would take more time. Also, if we were to get funding we could pay ourselves as well as artists/programmers/etc for work done on project.
ACTION: EGJ to see if any programmers have time to mock-up wiki. If not, will put together graphical representation and send to DB.
Pre-Launch
DB: Video can be shown. We need to choose which videos. Also flyering etc. DB & EGJ can give speeches at event. EGJ: Next meeting should focus on pre-launch. DB: Have it next week as Pre-Launch is on 5th October
At this point DB & TBB left to look after their child
Free Culture Congress
EGJ: Gave overview of congress MM/RLR: Do Congress and Pre-launch clash?
ACTION: EGJ to check dates
Next Meeting
It was agreed to meet on Sunday 11th September at 4:30. The focus of the meeting will be the Pre-Launch.
