Remix Brighton Aims
Our culture is under threat from the steady encroachment of privatisation and legally enforced gatekeepers to knowledge. We in Remix Brighon hope to demonstrate through artistic practice an alternative to the the current regime of expanding intellectual property rights and corporate control of culture. We want to work with artists, musicians, writers, academics, thinkers, friends and supporters in the local area to work to create spaces and networks for people to work together.
As part of this effort, we plan to develop workshops, gigs, free culture nights and a website to help co-ordinate and share free culture. We aim to do all this within a spirit of democracy and equality and are keen for others to get involved and work with us.
Key Aims
- To help artists collaborate in their local community (Brighton)
To work in partnership with Free Culture UK to promote an open and participatory culture. Like FC-UK, we believe that individuals and communities should be empowered to create, and that this can be done by legal, social and political means. We oppose those who would restrict our creative freedom, whether by extending laws relating to copyright, repressing new technologies or promoting a closed, proprietary future for culture.
- To ensure that Remix Brighton remains as open and particpatory as possible. We will actively encourage people from all walks of life to join and participate in Remix Brighton.
To promote the ideas of sharing, remixing and working together using alternative forms of copyright such as Creative Commons licenses.
To educate people about alternative approaches to copyright by organising public lectures, workshops and seminars - something for BrightonGroup, not RB, surely? (tom) - Surely there will be lots of overlap in the two groups - does it matter who organises the lectures? (EGJ)
To promote public awareness and use of Free and Open Source Software
- Using the website and live events we will encourage artists to meet up, work together and remix each others' work
- We will press CDs, host art exhibitions, have film screenings and other events using the work created through Remix Brighton. These activities will be based in Brighton and we will work in partnership with local artists, colleges, businesses, and the council to secure promotion, gigs, exhibitions, etc
- We believe artists (filmmakers/musicians/artists/writers) should be paid for their work and will try to pay them whenever possible.
